Oil

Things are looking really bad for humanity right now, and oil is one of the main causes. There is some resarch on green fuels underway, the most promising being hydrogen fuel, but will it really replace oil? And will it even finish resarch without any mysterious ''accidents'' or ''delays''?

Personally i think we're doomed by our greed... The oil companies are probably doing everything in their might (which is alot, like, everything from make a scientist dissapear to invade a country for oil alot) to stop it from ever getting out of resarch stage, and even if it gets out on the main market, they're going to do everything in their power to stop it from replacing oil.

Well, they can only do so much since oil is a NONreneweable resource, taking centuries to even create a drop due to fossils under the surface. They will eventually run out of oil then try to monopolize green fuels so they can stay in power.... unless someone is able to make every oil company in the world just shut down at the same time.... which even that wouldn't help much...

ya, elecitricty looks like it may be a viable option as some countries already employ it as their main source of stuff.

It's non renewable, but there's still plenty of it. Especially in antarctita (i think... Well, one of them is melting, and everyone wants the oil there) It's going to take a long time before we're all out.

It's too expensive go get that Oil... I go for nuke power and Eolic/Hidraulic/Solar energy... Two of them can also impulsionate us into Space! (GO NUKES AND SUNNY!)

I can cut down that dream of nuclear power right here: The break down of the used up nuclear powers cells takes centuries to complete... They bury the used cells deep in the earth, somewhere out in Nevada I think. There is also the fact that nuclear power plants can MELTDOWN, causing a huge radiation bath for any nearby towns within a few hundred kilometer radius.. but the mushroom cloud would be quite pretty to watch... from a good safe distance.

And then there's this tiny problem with turning our planet into one big powerplant. All the green alternatives we have are ineffective and need huge areas to have the effect of one nuclear generator.

Actually... Nuclear reactors go from Fission to Fusion reactors... You're talking about Fission ones, and, it's likely improbable that something like Chernobil and Three Mile Island happens again... Fusion reactors, now that's other thing!

These work on the same principle that could cause a calamity on Fission reactors. Think about it! Melting atoms of Hydrogen or Helium to produce pure raw energy! It would be enough to power Azeitão for the next millenia and still remains a lot of power!

Yes, fusion seems to be the way of the future... If we can invent it first... It could probably get us into space too, the more energy the better.

The best theoretical warp drive we have needs an entire jupiter of energy (by jupiter i mean the mass of jupiter converted into pure energy) to make a single short range jump. So i dont think fusion on the level we'll have it is going to solve that...

We still can't catalise the full potential of Fusion power... It will still be a few good decades (or centuries) till we start to apply it into our power grid... Until that we should focus our attention on low-polution resources (like natural gas or uranium) or renewable resources (like Sun, Wind and water)...

Fusion would be nice, but yes, unlikely in the short term. And fission has relatively even shorter usage length than oil and gas if everyone used it.

Wind power is actually carbon positive (not good) because of the power stations powering up when the wind is too strong or too weak

Norway produces more than enough energy just through HEP, and a large amount of power could be produced from tidal throughout the world. Those are the two sources with the most potential, because they're fairly constant (wave is pretty poor output)

As for solar, we could put it on the sahara and turn all our lights off on the days it rains (once or twice a year). However, that seems to be politically inconvenient.


Let's hope they manage to get something out of Copenhagen. But Australia just voted no for climate change-reducing measures, and China, India and Brazil have all said they won't do the proposed cuts.
